James Finley Hewes, Sr.
1943 – 2017

James Finley Hewes, Sr. of Gulfport, born October 16, 1943, passed away on February 22, 2017.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Terry Cruthirds Hewes; his parents, Frederick Searle Hewes, III and Gladys May Hewes; his brother, Frederick Searle Hewes IV; and his sisters, Mary Hewes McQuiston, Frances Jane Voelkel and Anne Hewes Haddock.

He is survived by his three sons, James Finley Hewes, Jr., Forrest Hewes and wife Tiffany, and Reed Hewes; four grandchildren, James Finley Hewes, III, Delia and Hesse Hewes, and Smith Hewes; and many more relatives and friends.

He graduated from St. Stanislaus High School, and obtained a BA from the University of Southern Mississippi. He worked in the clothing sales industry most of his professional career, and was co-founder of the Ducks Unlimited line of apparel. Mr. Hewes was a great family man and absolutely loved being a grandfather. He was kind, considerate, and had many passions in his life, including but no limited to golf, music, good food and cheering on the Golden Eagles of Southern Mississippi. He was happiest when entertaining family and he loved to cook for everyone. He never let much of anything get him down, and routinely found the bright side of any situation, which is a quality more people in the world could benefit from. The world lost one of the good guys on February 22, as he was loved dearly by anyone that ever had the opportunity to spend time with him. To say he will be sorely missed is a massive understatement.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Gulfport at 12:30pm, with a visitation for family and friends from 11:00am until the Mass. A private graveside will be held in Evergreen Cemetery in Gulfport.

Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Rd., Gulfport is serving the family.
